Marija Vujcic – South Ward Candidate Freo

I ran for South Ward in 2017 as an independent and played by the rules of the game by ensuring that my candidate registration information was true and correct.

The Council’s returning officer highlighted the serious nature of providing incorrect information. It was uncovered during the election that Ben Moodie, a candidate for South Ward, lived in Hamilton Hill which belonged to the City of Cockburn.

The Fremantle Council were on Ben Moodie’s side and let slide the legal implications of their inaction.

The WA Electoral Commission were also silent. Their actions were wrong. Ben Moodie should have been disqualified from the election. I decided to stand up for the residents and for our system, at my own expense, and won in the Fremantle Magistrates Court.

The South Ward election was re-run in March 2018. Andrew Sullivan won the by-election. However, I did not consider myself a loser because I discovered the silent majority who no longer believe that they have any skin in the game.

I connected with the residents and encouraged them to vote and the turnout was over 50 per cent.

Fast forward to 2019 and a new local election is in progress.

There are two candidates in the race for South Ward. Jon Strachan and myself. Jon is proud of his support for the South Terrace speed humps. He says that he is at the top of his game and is keen to keep working on your behalf. It will be business as usual.

Jon is oblivious that the majority of resident and visitors overwhelmingly do not support the South Terrace speed humps.

Most residents want more skin in the game and are hungry for real policies and action that will bring back “fair exchange” into our community.

I stand for the removal of the South Terrace speed humps, priority parking for residents, practical support for local business to thrive through increased marketing and visitor numbers, security upgrades better lighting and more CCTV; South Beach facilities upgrade; zero rate increase for 2020-2021; the extension of the CAT service north of Hampton Road; and a dog wash station installed at Dog Beach.

I have a proven track record of standing up for South Freo issues across two local elections. I know that this time with your support we can truly make a difference.

Let’s do it for the South Fremantle Ward.
